Classic Beef Cottage Pie with Cheesy Mashed Potato and Green Beans | Prepped in 45 Minutes

A British favourite, cottage pie is most recognisable as a deeply savoury layer of meat filling topped with mash. We’re sticking to the classics here with beef, as well as adding cheese to the mash for extra indulgence. Best enjoyed after grilling until golden and scrumptious! See the original recipe here.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Get Prepped: Bring a large saucepan of water to the boil with 1/2 tsp salt. Chop the potatoes into 2cm chunks (peel if preferred). Trim and coarsely grate the carrot. Peel and grate the garlic.
  2. Fry the Beef: Add the potatoes to boiling water and cook until tender, 15-20 minutes. Meanwhile, heat a frying pan over medium-high heat (no oil). Fry the beef mince and grated carrot until browned, 5-6 minutes, breaking up the mince as it cooks. IMPORTANT: Wash hands and equipment after handling raw mince. The mince is cooked when no longer pink.
  3. Cook the Sauce: Stir in the garlic and cook for 1 minute. Add the passata, red wine stock paste, dried oregano, sugar, and water (see ingredients). Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer until thickened, 4-5 minutes.
  4. Make the Mash: Preheat the grill to high. Trim the green beans. Drain the potatoes and return to the pan. Add a knob of butter and a splash of milk (if available), then mash until smooth. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Time to Grill: Pour the beef mixture into an ovenproof dish and spread the mash over the top. Smooth it out with the back of a spoon, then sprinkle over the cheese. Grill until bubbling and golden, 5-6 minutes. Let stand for a few minutes before serving.
  6. Finish and Serve: While the pie grills, heat a frying pan over medium-high heat with a drizzle of oil. Stir-fry the green beans for 2-3 minutes, then add a splash of water and cover with a lid or foil. Cook until tender, 4-5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Serve the beef cottage pie with green beans on the side.

Chef’s Tip

For a crispy mashed potato topping, use a fork to create ridges before grilling.
