Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Cook the Rice: Boil a kettle. While boiling, trim and cut the green beans into thirds. Pour the boiled water into a large saucepan with 1/4 tsp salt over high heat. Add the rice and cook for 5-6 minutes. You’ll finish cooking it in step 3 with the green beans.
  2. Fry the Mince: Heat a frying pan over medium-high heat (no oil). Once hot, fry the beef mince, breaking it up as it cooks, until browned, 5-6 minutes. IMPORTANT: Wash hands and equipment after handling raw mince. While cooking, crush the peanuts using a rolling pin and grate the garlic.
  3. Add the Beans: After the rice has cooked for 5-6 minutes, add the green beans to the same pan and cook for another 5-6 minutes. Drain everything using a sieve, then place the sieve over the pan to steam until ready to use.
  4. Bring on the Flavour: Once the mince has browned, drain excess fat and season with salt and pepper. IMPORTANT: The mince is cooked when no longer pink in the middle. Stir in the garlic and gochujang paste (use less for a milder taste) and fry for 1 minute. Add honey, soy sauce, and water (see ingredients). Simmer for 2-3 minutes, then stir in the butter until melted.
  5. All Together Now: Add the cooked rice and green beans to the beef frying pan. Mix well so the rice is evenly coated in the sauce. Season with salt and pepper, then remove from heat.
  6. Serve Up: Divide the gochujang beef fried rice between bowls. Sprinkle with crushed peanuts to finish.

Chef’s Tip

For an extra crunch, lightly toast the peanuts before adding them as a garnish.
