Rooted is a Calgary-based meal kit company that offers weekly meal plans full of delicious and nutritious plant-based meals. This is a great option if you or someone in your family needs gluten-free meals, as all of their meals qualify, plus no preservatives are used. With each order, you receive fresh produce that's sourced locally to provide organic meal kits, wherever possible. 

Rooted also sends you recipe cards with photos and step-by-step instructions on how to prepare each meal, so the learning curve is easy and no advanced cooking skills are needed. In addition, the company is known for its variety of unique, great-tasting sauces that can be used in pasta and other dishes. The ingredients are fresh and not preserved, meaning you'll likely feel much better for eating these meals.

As a Rooted customer, you can subscribe to either of these two meal plans:

1. The “Peas in a Pod” Box. This is the best option for two adults. You will get three large dinners a week, and you can also expect to have leftovers.
2. The “Bunch of Carrots” Box. This one will feed four adults, or a family of two adults, and three or four children (depending on age and appetite). Rooted meals are kid-friendly!

Perhaps the biggest drawbacks of Rooted meal kits are the lack of flexibility and the option to customize meals and plans. With both of the above plans, you will receive enough for three meals for either two adults or for four adults (or two adults and three or four children). This may not cover enough meals like you were after. But, since the ingredients are fresh and without preservatives, Rooted wouldn't be able to guarantee freshness if the ingredients had to last longer in the fridge. You could get around this slightly by ordering some of their homemade sauces because you can freeze them. Then you could add these to pasta or rice for a faster-than-normal dinner, although not as fast as a meal kit's going to be. 

You can see the weekly menu the week in advance of all the recipes you will be receiving, so you could choose to skip a week if you're going away or don't want one or more of the meals. Sadly, these don't include the ingredients online, so you won't know exactly what you're getting until it arrives. You can see the prices per serving, total prices for one week, and the shipping fees in the table below. One thing you may notice is that there's always a "base" fee of $9.99. This is very rare for meal kit companies to charge something like this. There are cheaper meal kit services and most won't have this additional cost. 

Sample Recipes and Sauces

Here are some recipes that have been on the menu: burrito bowl, yellow Thai curry, one pot Mexican rice casserole, mushroom stroganoff, lentil bolognese, butternut truffle penne, plantain lettuce wrap, and a sushi bowl. 

Many people like the sauces that come with Rooted meal kits. They have become so popular that the company has actually begun selling them separately. You can order Butternut Truffle, Cauliflower Alfredo, Tomato, or Okra Cheese sauce. Unlike the meal kits, you can see the list of ingredients that have been used, and they are packed full of delicious but healthy vegetables, nuts, oils, and spices. You can order any of the sauces for $20 (two x 500 ml), or sample one of each with their variety pack for $40 (four x 500 ml).

For now, Rooted meal kits are limited to Alberta residents. We hope that the company is going to expand their services to more provinces soon. Usually, Rooted delivers on Tuesday to your home address. You don’t have to sign for your delivery, and you don’t even have to be at home. In the event that your Rooted box is lost or stolen, you can alert customer service, and the company will either send you a new box or issue credit for your next order.

Rooted offers two plans: one is for two adults and the other is for four (or a family). In case you need to switch between the two plans, you can always do so before the weekly deadline on Wednesday. The same deadline applies if you need to skip a week or cancel your subscription. Your subscription will be auto-renewed each week until cancelled.
