Editorial Notes
Rooted is a Calgary-based meal kit company that offers weekly meal plans full of delicious and nutritious plant-based meals. This is a great option if you or someone in your family needs gluten-free meals, as all of their meals qualify, plus no preservatives are used. With each order, you receive fresh produce that's sourced locally to provide organic meal kits, wherever possible.
Rooted also sends you recipe cards with photos and step-by-step instructions on how to prepare each meal, so the learning curve is easy and no advanced cooking skills are needed. In addition, the company is known for its variety of unique, great-tasting sauces that can be used in pasta and other dishes. The ingredients are fresh and not preserved, meaning you'll likely feel much better for eating these meals.

Rooted has been on the meal kit market for years now. Established in 2017 in Calgary, the company delivers vegan meal kits in Alberta and plans to expand to other provinces soon. You can contact the company representatives to see if and when the company will become available in your area.
Rooted is not registered with the Better Business Bureau and does not have a rating there, but the customers rate it very highly on Google with five stars out of five (16 customers).
Rooted Meal Plans and Menus
As a Rooted customer, you can subscribe to either of these two meal plans:
- The “Peas in a Pod” Box. This is the best option for two adults. You will get three large dinners a week, and you can also expect to have leftovers.
- The “Bunch of Carrots” Box. This one will feed four adults, or a family of two adults, and three or four children (depending on age and appetite). Rooted meals are kid-friendly!
Perhaps the biggest drawbacks of Rooted meal kits are the lack of flexibility and the option to customize meals and plans. With both of the above plans, you will receive enough for three meals for either two adults or for four adults (or two adults and three or four children). This may not cover enough meals like you were after. But, since the ingredients are fresh and without preservatives, Rooted wouldn't be able to guarantee freshness if the ingredients had to last longer in the fridge. You could get around this slightly by ordering some of their homemade sauces because you can freeze them. Then you could add these to pasta or rice for a faster-than-normal dinner, although not as fast as a meal kit's going to be.
You can see the weekly menu the week in advance of all the recipes you will be receiving, so you could choose to skip a week if you're going away or don't want one or more of the meals. Sadly, these don't include the ingredients online, so you won't know exactly what you're getting until it arrives. You can see the prices per serving, total prices for one week, and the shipping fees in the table below. One thing you may notice is that there's always a "base" fee of $9.99. This is very rare for meal kit companies to charge something like this. There are cheaper meal kit services and most won't have this additional cost.
Sample Recipes and Sauces
Here are some recipes that have been on the menu: burrito bowl, yellow Thai curry, one pot Mexican rice casserole, mushroom stroganoff, lentil bolognese, butternut truffle penne, plantain lettuce wrap, and a sushi bowl.
Many people like the sauces that come with Rooted meal kits. They have become so popular that the company has actually begun selling them separately. You can order Butternut Truffle, Cauliflower Alfredo, Tomato, or Okra Cheese sauce. Unlike the meal kits, you can see the list of ingredients that have been used, and they are packed full of delicious but healthy vegetables, nuts, oils, and spices. You can order any of the sauces for $20 (two x 500 ml), or sample one of each with their variety pack for $40 (four x 500 ml).

For this section of our review, we wanted to gain an insight into what people who have ordered Rooted Meal Prep kits in the past thought about their experience. Furthermore, we wanted to learn how that feedback compares to reviews of the company’s competitors. We went through hundreds of online reviews of different meal kit companies and marked them as positive, negative, or mixed. Next, we singled out all the different reasons reviewers gave for liking or disliking the company, and compiled them together.
When you look at online reviews, you should remember that most people who leave feedback online are those who were either very satisfied or very unhappy with the service or product they received. At the same time, those who thought that their purchase was good enough and on par with what they expected usually don’t feel the need to share their experience online. This bias is especially evident when it comes to purchases that are made completely online, which is the case with meal kits (except in some instances like Longos meal kits). This is why we don’t just look at the ratio of positive and negative reviews in our analysis. Instead, we take a deep dive to discover what exactly customers liked and hated about the meal kits they’ve tried.
Distribution of Rooted Meal Prep reviews compared to industry-wide averages
Most frequently given reasons for liking or disliking the company
Next, we wanted to understand what exactly customers love about Rooted Meal Prep service, so we analyzed all the specific reasons people gave in their feedback. We found that many reviewers praised the meal kit delivery service for their delicious food, responsive customer support, and clear recipes. The proportion of people who noted these advantages in their reviews was higher than the industry average in each case. At the same time, we could not compare the negative aspects people mentioned in their reviews because there wasn’t any negative feedback about the company online. Overall, this indicates that people who order Rooted Meal Prep boxes range from satisfied to extremely happy with the service.
Here are some reviews we found extra helpful, as they were in-depth and clearly point out why the customers love the meal kits so much:
"Rooted meal prep has been my lifesaver! After some health challenges, I wanted to make some healthy changes to my diet. Having a toddler at home and a busy schedule, not having to worry about grocery shopping or deciding what to make for dinner took so much off my plate. Also, the increase in my energy, mental clarity, and overall feeling of well-being after switching to a plant-based diet has been the best prize of all! Thank you so much to Rooted for helping me get on a healthier path for myself and my family."
"Love my rooted meal boxes! This has by far been the best meal prep box I have tried because the meal ideas are creative and made from whole foods and something that I wouldn't normally be able to make or even think up on my own! I LOVE LOVE LOVE the homemade sauces that come with the kits. It makes cooking for myself or my family a breeze! And the kids love it!"
As you can see, the fact that Rooted can help you eat healthily is a big plus for customers. After all, it's not easy to find companies that specialize in vegan food or even vegetarian meal kits.

Rooted Review: Bottom Line
For all vegans, vegetarians, and those who are interested in trying a plant-based diet, Rooted offers tasty and flavorful plant-based meals delivered weekly to the doorsteps. You will get three recipe cards and all the necessary ingredients to cook healthy meals for two or four people. You can successfully prepare any Rooted dish regardless of your cooking experience because the recipe cards will guide you step-by-step.
If you have never cooked before, it might take you a little longer than the estimated time on the card, but in a few weeks, you will be cooking like a pro!
To prepare the meals, you will need all basic cooking tools, such as pots and pans, knives, and a cutting board. You may also need to already have some common kitchen items on hand, like oil, sugar, and salt. Meal kits can help you lose weight because you can add less oil and sugar. With Rooted, it will also mean you're eating a better-balanced diet too so will stay full for longer on the whole foods in your dinners.
